Infographics and Questions Created by AI
This year’s emergence of AI-powered tools for education reminds me a bit of the emergence of Web 2.0 tools fifteen years ago. Back then there were a lot of new tools emerging that had great potential despite being rough around the edges. I feel the same way about a lot of AI tools right now.
Piktochart AI is the latest AI tool that I’ve tried that has potential to be good once the quirks are worked out. It’s a tool that will generate infographics based on the prompts that you provide to it. I tested it with a few prompts last week. It works well, but there are some quirks. You can see how it works by watching this video.
As you can see in the video, I gave Piktochart AI a prompt to create an infographic about the most popular Thanksgiving foods. Two of the quirks that I point out in the video deal with the list Piktochart created and the images it selected. The list put ham as the second most popular Thanksgiving food. And in some instances Piktochart chose pictures of Türkiye (often spelled Turkey) rather than turkey.
Those quirks of Piktochart AI provide teaching opportunities. First, because the source for the list of foods isn’t provided, there’s a little research assignment for students to verify the accuracy of the list. Second, there’s a little lesson in the importance of context when writing and responding to a prompt.
